"The Godfather of Sole" (aka Christian Louboutin), in the May 2010 issue of Vanity Fair, illustrates why fashion people are often seen as stupid by the wider public. It includes quotes such as:
"You know, I've run away from repo men in his shoes." She leans in: "My mom has even declared bankruptcy to buy me his shoes."
Her mom shrugs. "It's no biggie," she explains. Bankruptcy just sits on your credit report for a few years."
Actually more than stupid, this is slightly unbelievable. As is this custom-made pair "with a sole made entirely of rubies." You did read it right. I guess that some people really really like red.
A couple of quotes from Louboutin himself, chosen by the magazine as pull quotes, are also memorable:
"I was at a dinner in London after the financial crisis hit, and everyone was talking about the credit crunch," he tells me "I said, 'What's "credit crunch"? Is that a new gym?"
Rwanda - "very violent, but quite nice outfits on the military"
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Louboutin is stupid. He's an excellent craftsman and designer and has his pulse on what women want like few others. He's also really good at marketing. For most people however, those quotes display an unforgivable lack of awareness of international affairs which can only happen in the fashion industry.
Those quotes aside, Vanessa Grigoriadis's feature is a really good read thanks to its account of the expansion of the Louboutin empire and analysis of the reasons behind his success.
PS: The shoe is the Lady Claude 120 Pony Guepard from the AW 2010 collection. Its name reminds me of maisons closes, Madame Anaïs style.
